MAINOS:

Yhdysvaltojen Pohjois-Carolinan Raleighista tulee melodödistä soittava The Atrophic. Yhtye vastaili Metalliluolan kysymyspatteristoon, tutustu bändiin alta.

Bändin nimi? We are The Atrophic, from Raleigh, North Carolina (USA).
Yhtyeen genre? We play technical melodic death metal.
Ketä yhtyeeseen kuuluu? The Atrophic was started by Sean Irizarry (Vocals) and Kyle Kuffermann (Guitars) in 2021. We collaborated with Robin Stone (Session Drummer) to complete our debut EP, Coagulating Mirth. We also had the opportunity to work with Hannes Grossmann (Alkaloid, Triptykon), who helped produce our material.
Mistä yhtyeenne on kotoisin? Raleigh, North Carolina (USA) is our hometown.
Yhtyeenne esikuvat? We bonded over The Black Dahlia Murder since it’s a band we’re both into. But we’re also inspired by Allegaeon, At The Gates, Mors Principium Est, and others.Kyle: As a band, we’re pretty heavily influenced by The Black Dahlia Murder, as well as classic melodeath bands like At The Gates, and some of the current modern tech death bands like Allegaeon and Inferi. As far as my guitar playing, I was influenced a lot by bands like Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Pantera. I’ve also been listening to a lot of Mors Principium Est lately as well.
Kertokaa yhtyeenne taustatarina? Sean: Kyle and I met through Craigslist last year. We both connected on the idea of starting a melodic death metal band local to the area, and began to update two songs that he had already been working on. Once they met the style and mood we were aiming for, he wrote two new ones that were perfect for the EP. We fleshed them out together and once the core structures were done, we worked with session members to fill in the gaps and polish them further.Working on the music during the pandemic was a good mental escape. We had enough confidence in the quality of the rough tracks that we reached out to Robin Stone to help finalize the drums, and we were blown away by his musicianship and professionalism. We also reached out to Hannes Grossmann, who provided valuable feedback on the song structures, and helped develop our sound as our producer and audio engineer.

Art is equally important to us. Brutal music has to be complimented with equally creative visuals. We decided to aim high and were able to design our band logo with Jota Cravo, and commission art covers from Vladimir Chebakov and Sanskarans, who are incredible surreal/horror artists. Credit is also due to Sound Escape Agency, our band management, for offering sound guidance and helping us navigate our own independent release.

Kyle: During the pandemic, I started working from home, so without a daily commute, I had much more free time to focus on guitar. Although I’ve been playing for a long time, I decided to start taking lessons from Greg Burgess of Allegaeon – he’s really helped me push my playing to the next level. I started writing music (after not writing anything for years) and decided to try to find other musicians through Craigslist. I met Sean and we wrote the EP together, then we hired Robin Stone as a session drummer and Hannes Grossmann as our producer. Recording the EP went smoothly overall – we each recorded our parts at home, then Hannes put it all together.

Minkälaiset tavoitteet yhtyeellänne on? Our primary goal is to produce the best work that we can as independent artists, especially with our music. We strive to write and perform music at the highest quality possible, since it drives everything else. Our second goal is to be able to outdo our recordings and craft an impressive live set to challenge ourselves and enjoy our local metal scene.Kyle: Really, my only goal with this is to make good music – stuff that I would want to listen to myself.
Minkälainen työnjako musiikin tekemisessä on? Sean: Kyle is the main composer behind The Atrophic. He writes very well structured songs, while I look for opportunities to provide feedback and contribute lyrics. While he’s focused on killer leads and solos, I leverage my background in graphic design to collaborate with other reputable artists for album covers, merchandising, and web design. Our DIY ethic carries us.
Millainen kokemus bändinne on livenä ja miksi yhtyeenne keikoille kannattaa tulla? The Atrophic started as a duo, but we’re working on connecting with other musicians to play live. Show goers can expect a high level of musicianship, intensity, drama free in your face death metal. We believe our style brings a unique sound to our city and we want to play with the diverse bands of our area.
Uusimman levynne nimi: Coagulating Mirth is our debut EP. The title itself comes from the pandemic. During last year’s lockdowns, our personal circumstances were stable, while everything else felt uncertain and dire. It captures the mood we held not that long ago.
Avatkaa uuden levynne taustoja. Mikä on toiminut levyn inspiraationa? The pandemic birthed most of the concepts behind the album. We saw nations in disarray, opportunists exploiting the situation, polarizing views on solutions, questions on morality and mortality, a sea of cynicism and uncertainty. Writing the EP was an exercise in escaping reality and exploring bleak themes that we haven’t had to consider until now.
Minkä bändin kanssa lähtisitte kaikkein mieluiten kiertämään maailmaa? Sean: This is a tough one. I would take a shot at touring with Obscura. I’ve only had a chance to see their live videos, but their sets are really tight. It would be a treat to watch them day in and day out, but also to challenge ourselves to bring music worthy of their audiences.
Jos uudelta levyltä/vanhasta tuotannosta pitäisi suositella kahta biisiä, niin mitkä ne olisivat ja miksi? Sean: I recommend “Vessels for the Oligarchs”, from our upcoming EP. It’s our heaviest and meanest song and has the potential to create a death pit vortex at our shows. I can’t wait!Kyle: I’d recommend ”Horrid Mortal Tendrils”, the last song on the EP. This song has a perfect mix of intensity, technicality, and melodicism. I’m really proud of the bass and guitar solos in this one
Mikä musiikki kolahtaa yhtyeellenne juuri nyt? Sean: I enjoy finding new bands and have been listening to Gravecrawler and Ophidian I. Earth Rot is on repeat too.Kyle: I love Allegaeon’s new album Damnum and Inferi’s Vile Genesis. I’ve also been listening to Obscura quite a bit.
Muita asioita, joita haluatte kertoa yhtyeestänne: Sean: For listeners who dive into lyrics, they’ll find concepts and themes that are more relatable than your average metal fantasies. There’s much more power in music when the lyrics are rooted in conviction and the real world. I follow Chuck Schuldiner’s school of thought when it comes to lyrics and clearer vocal delivery.
Minkälaiset terveiset haluatte lähettää lukijoille? Thanks for your support and interest in The Atrophic. Coagulating Mirth is a tribute to melo-death and we hope you enjoy it!
