| Ketä yhtyeeseen kuuluu? | We are five passionate Metal Heads with decades of experience. Andreas provides the neck-breaking rhythm which is typical for our sound with his drums and he is also a founding member of Battlesword, Axel enchants the listeners with his thoughtful lyrics and the well-known portion of aggressiveness in his voice, Ben ensures with his 4-string woofer that our sound penetrates the deepest corners of the souls of our listeners, Erik & Lars together try to summon the dark spirits of melodic death metal in the deepest abysses through their sweaty work on their 7-strings. |
| Mistä yhtyeenne on kotoisin? | We are all living in North-Rhine Westphalia in Germany and are somewhat centred around an area called Viersen, which is closely located to larger cities like Duesseldorf and Cologne. |
| Yhtyeenne esikuvat? | Lars: I think it’s fair to say that there are many bands who are influencing us or did so in the past. For me it certainly still is true for Metallica, who had a great influence on my playing style. But also bands like In Flames, Insomnium, Soilwork, Dark Tranquillity to just name a few. I love to listen to music and explore new stuff – both from bands I didn’t know before and from bands which are well established.Erik: My personal metal journey started in the late 80‘s with the NWOBHM and bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Motörhead followed by a thrashy period with bands like Metallica, Anthrax and Slayer all of which I still love to listen to today. Later the scandinavian melodic death metal took me by storm after a friend of mine introduced me to Soilworks „As we Speak“ from their killer-album „Natural born Chaos“; after that my metal compass was carved in stone (laughs).
Axel: I have started listening to metal quite late and the first bands I got in contact with were also those icons like Metallica and Iron Maiden. Now, 30 years later, I listen to bands from nearly every metallic sub-genre, but my favourite styles are and will be (the Scandinavian) melodic death and black metal. |
| Kertokaa yhtyeenne taustatarina? | Battlesword was founded back in 1999 by Andreas and his brother and a few other friends who loved to play music together. Soon Battlesword’s own style was found and the band began to write songs. Following the first demo recording “Crusade Of Steel”, the first real milestone with the release of “Failing In Triumph” was celebrated in 2003. This first album was followed by the EP “13TH Black Crusade” in 2008 and the 2nd longplayer “Banners Of Destruction” eight years later in 2016. 2019 marked then the release of the third full length album with the title “…And Death Cometh Upon Us”. And this last one with all the great and positive feedback coming with it really had let our appetite grow to start the work on a new output which will be released later this month 🙂 |
| Minkälaiset tavoitteet yhtyeellänne on? | As said before, music is our passion and we want to follow our passion as long as we can and to conquer as many stages as possible worldwide. The goal is to let us and our continuously growing fanbase shake our heads and headbang together and to have a great time surrounded by our family of Metal Heads. |
| Minkälainen työnjako musiikin tekemisessä on? | Since we don’t have an army of helpers, we really have to divide the work we have among ourselves, but we are glad that we have a great support on our side with MDD (our label) and from there a lot of experience is shared with us, but also some work is taken away. Axel takes care of the many concert requests and is supported by Andreas and Lars. Andreas takes care of the design and layout of promotional materials and our website; Erik has taken over the maintenance of our band store. We also have our social media activities, which are handled by Axel and Andreas. Song writing usually starts with Lars and/or Erik and the ideas are then worked out together. But all decisions are always made together. |
| Millainen kokemus bändinne on livenä ja miksi yhtyeenne keikoille kannattaa tulla? | One thing is sure and certainly guaranteed: extensive neck pain and happy faces among the fans and certainly us |
| Uusimman levynne nimi: | Towards The Unknown – it’s brand-new and will be released on Sept. 16th in Germany and Sept. 23rd internationally through our label MDD Records as CD, limited Digipak-Box-Edition and on all streaming platforms. Later this autumn a vinyl edition will be released via Doc Gator Records from Switzerland.

| Avatkaa uuden levynne taustoja. Mikä on toiminut levyn inspiraationa? | We’ve gone through a few uncertainties in the most recent past – actually this is true for the entire mankind with the Covid pandemic at the forefront. But also for us as a band and individuals we’ve had to handle change and therefore our journey “towards the unknown” had begun. It felt like a storm started to evolve and would push us to explore new boundaries. A new era – unstoppable but with a potentially great outlook. For us it feels like the most complete and “round” album so far and makes us really proud. |
| Minkä bändin kanssa lähtisitte kaikkein mieluiten kiertämään maailmaa? | Lars: (laughing) Well, I’d personally like to tour with the gods of Melodic Death Metal “Amon Amarth”. We’ve seen articles and reviews in which we or at least some parts of our music had been compared and connected with Amon Amarth and it would be really great to see and learn if this would be confirmed by their very large and worldwide fanbase So, dear fellow musicians at Amon Amarth, if you come to read this, reach out and let’s plan something together 😉 Erik: Dark Tranquility! Whenever I‘ve been to their shows they always had this fantastic, positive energy vibe thing and the crowds shared it as well. Would love to see and feel that from the on stage perspective. Axel: If I could choose it would be The Crown and Kataklysm. They both stand for raw, energetic music and live performances and I think we would fit to them as a support. |
| Jos uudelta levyltä/vanhasta tuotannosta pitäisi suositella kahta biisiä, niin mitkä ne olisivat ja miksi? | Lars: One of the very first songs of Battlesword with which I came in contact with was Chapter II from the band’s very first album “Failing in Triumph”. A great song which we still enjoy playing live. The other one would be “The Awakening” which is the opener of our new album “Towards The Unknown”. This song embodies pure energy and has the power to destroy almost everything which is in its way.Erik: I can absolutely agree with Lars‘ choices and besides those two great tracks I really like „The 13th Black Crusade“, from the so titled 2008 demo with a real nasty groove and „The Shores of I“ from our new upcoming album; a very atmospheric track with straight-forward and more calm parts and fantastic lyrics on top (thanks for that Axel! 😉 ) – for me personally a great mixture. |
| Mikä musiikki kolahtaa yhtyeellenne juuri nyt? | First and foremost our own songs as we prepare for a few shows which are upcoming 🙂 Besides this, we enjoy listening to all kinds of music – which actually is a great source of inspiration. |
| Muita asioita, joita haluatte kertoa yhtyeestänne: | The anticipation for the new album is huge (almost reverting back to childhood) and we can’t wait to hold the finished product in our hands and see how our fans and the scene react to it. |
| Minkälaiset terveiset haluatte lähettää lukijoille? | Well, something we won’t stop telling anybody is to please continue to support your local metal scene. There are so many really great bands out there which deserve your support. You’ll make all of them happy if you like their music and maybe purchase their albums and merchandise items, like shirts, patches, etc. and wear it with pride. This is what makes this scene very unique and unites all of us – the passion about the music. And by this: thanks for having us here and to support our very own journey. Such a pleasure for us.
