MAINOS:

Industrial metallista vaikutteita ottanut yksimiehinen Binary Order vastaili Metalliluolan kysymyspatteristoon. Tutustu projektiin alta.

Bändin nimi: I go by Binary Order when I publish music online
Yhtyeen genre: I don’t mind what genre people put my music in but it’s predominantly industrial metal, although a fair few of my songs wouldn’t fit that distinction such as tracks like A Good Death and The Hands of Time.
Ketä yhtyeeseen kuuluu: Binary Order is just I (Benjamin Blank), I was in collaborative projects during my teens when I first took an interest in rock/metal music – but these would always fall apart. Eventually I started writing my own material just so I could be completely independent in both the actual sound of the music and not have to worry about commitment issues. It was a long, difficult, road learning to be every member of Binary Order from the singer to the guitar player to the producer but with Messages from the Deep I think I got to a place where it’s all finally come together.
Mistä yhtyeenne on kotoisin: The UK, I’m currently based just outside of East London in a place called Essex. It’s reputation precedes it…. (it’s a horrible place).
Yhtyeenne esikuvat: It’s changed massively over the years and changes from album to album as I’m constantly discovering new music. The main influence when I started was Nine Inch Nails but now days I’m very excited by what bands like HEALTH or artists like Lorn are doing. Outside of that I’ve still got massive love for Papa Roach.
Kertokaa yhtyeenne taustatarina: So Binary Order begun around 2008, I was at university at the time and I think it had been a few years since the last band I was in and I was getting the desire to write music again. My brother was getting into music production at that time in Fruity Loops and we initially started working together under the name Binary Order, but that soon fell apart as we wanted to write very different music. I wanted to write stuff more like Crystal Castles but more aggressive (like what Youth Code would eventually go on to make) but he was more interested in what I can only describe as the “Lego Racer’s Build Theme” meets David Bowie haha.
After that I kept the name and started getting into music production, it was on and off for years sort of putting songs together, trying to sing over them and really find a way of doing it alone that worked – inspired very much by Trent Reznor at this point. I always had an ear for song structure and composition so it was about building everything up around it to a good enough level.
It wasn’t until 2015 that I started to take Binary Order really seriously and make good progress towards where I am today.
Minkälaiset tavoitteet yhtyeellänne on: Binary Order is a creative outlet for me first and foremost, it’s a project where I can express my musical creativity without limits. There is a distinct sound to Binary Order right now, but that doesn’t mean that’s what it’s always going to be. Whatever I find interesting is what I’ll end up setting as my goal.
Aside from that it’s to be an emotional outlet for me, writing songs about difficult or traumatic situations is something I’ve leant towards since I started writing – if I ever got my life to a completely positive place I would probably just make instrumentals.
Minkälainen työnjako musiikin tekemisessä on: Binary Order is just me right now, I’ve had friends come in and help with various aspects or play on certain songs but the new album Messages from the Deep is 100% me. From the performance, to the production and the visual element, although I have had numerous friends given feedback during the production portion that were invaluable to the end product.
Going forward I would love to open up Binary to be more collaborative but I’ve always struggled to find others with the same level of commitment or passion for creating music as I.
Millainen kokemus bändinne on livenä ja miksi yhtyeenne keikoille kannattaa tulla: At the moment I don’t perform live with Binary Order but eventually I would like to.
Uusimman levynne nimi:

The title is Messages from the Deep, which is a reference to the opening line from Dune (2021) “Dreams are messages from the deep”. The film (and books after reading them) really had an impact on me and what I was going through during preproduction – it seemed like a perfect fit and a way to pay homage to an amazing franchise.

Avatkaa uuden levynne/julkaisunne taustoja. Mikä on toiminut sen inspiraationa ja miten tuotos on syntynyt: Predominately cyberpunk (and to a broader sense sci-fi) media, such as films and books. I really wanted to lean into that and reflect it visually and musically where I could. Not so much in the writing itself but more so the overall sound and attitude of the album. Create something that seemed like it could exist in a world like Judge Dredd’s or Akira’s while still having an identity of its own.
Thematically it started with a reaction to really intense nightmares I was having then exploring those through the music, by doing so I found myself touching upon more tangible issues such as the state of society and what its affect is having on me. Messages isn’t a political album but it’s a reaction to our current political climate, and I think a lot of the themes I touch upon (social unrest, political and interpersonal isolation, class divisionism etc) are featured strongly in cyberpunk media which then resulted in me leaning into that more.
Minkä bändin kanssa lähtisitte kaikkein mieluiten kiertämään maailmaa: Honestly it’d probably be either HEALTH or Nine Inch Nails. They’re both such big inspirations for the music I create that I think a show together would be amazing. Other than them definitely Papa Roach. I love those guys, and have done since I was 13 so a chance to hang out with them on tour would be a dream come true.
Jos uudelta levyltä/vanhasta tuotannosta pitäisi suositella kahta biisiä, niin mitkä ne olisivat ja miksi: From Messages from the Deep I think the most defining songs are Violence and The Hands of Time. With Violence it really captures that duality of my sound in the intensity of the guitar riffs and the synth melodies. While pushing the more cinematic elements that’s prevalent on the album, being in the harmonic minor as well I think gives the track a really interesting dark edge.
With The Hands of Time it’s almost the other end of the spectrum, in that the track is more subdued and has a very different type of emotional intensity. It was a difficult song to get right, and almost got scrapped at one point because it felt too far in the radio friendly kind of direction, but the place I’ve got the song to now I feel it’s definitely one of the strongest on the album.
I think between the two songs they represent the overall sound I’ve achieved on Messages from the Deep accurately.
Mikä musiikki kolahtaa yhtyeellenne juuri nyt: Since finishing the album I’ve basically had two artists on repeat So Below and Bohren & Der Club Of Gore. They’re both radically different from each other and my own music but I’m in love with their sound right now.
Apart from that Lorn has just released a new song that absolutely blew my mind when I heard it called Entropyyy, I adore his work and hoping it means there’s a full album to follow soon.
Muita asioita, joita haluatte kertoa yhtyeestänne: I suppose just that as long as I’m alive I’ll continue making Binary Order, I’ve wrote music during some of the worst times of my life and I’ve wrote music when it was incredibly detrimental to me to do so. So I’m not stopping now, I’m in love with making music, it’s the only thing I’ve ever got right.
Minkälaiset terveiset haluatte lähettää lukijoille: Thanks for taking the time to read through and I hope you check the album out when it releases on the 29th. I always love hearing feedback on my work (positive or negative) so if you have any opinions or thoughts let me know on any of the many comment sections on my socials.
I’ve already spoken to a few fans that have reacted positively to the two singles and it’s great to hear people are responding to my art, it’s why I make it public in the first place.
